Raymer Historic Apartments
Lafayette, Indiana

Historic Arts & Shopping District

    401 North 9th Street

This large wood Italianate from the "Victorian" Architectural Era stands proud on the corner of North 9th Street and North Street after the bold restoration conducted on it in 1997. Beautiful leaded glass doors adorn the entries on both North and 9th Street. This building was originally built at the end of the 1800's by the Wilkes (husband and wife team) who ran a millinery, shoe and hat store out of the first floor shops and had their living space and boarding rooms in the second floor. The original address on North street had a small log home that was destroyed by fire prior to the Wilkes building this structure. In the spring, the flowering crab look like large snowballs lining Historic 9th Street.
